In Switzerland, the handling of lasers at events with an audience are newly regulated from December 2020. The "expert knowledge" of the operator is required, and this must be obtained through participation in appropriate training.
There are two different types of training:
- 1-day training for the certificate of competence level 1
- 4-day training for the certificate of competence level 2
Both trainings differ from the laser safety seminars offered in Germany, for example.
In order to be allowed to offer training for the certificate of competence level 1 or the certificate of competence level 2, the respective provider must be listed with the Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) - only then are the corresponding trainings also recognised and valid.
What else is important?
Events involving laser radiation must be reported via a central reporting portal of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). The prerequisite for submitting a notification for lasers of classes 1M, 2M, 3R, 3B and 4 is the acquired expertise. Events can therefore only be registered accordingly if the person registering also has the corresponding expertise.
Is a person with a certificate of competence level 1 allowed to perform a laser show with audience scanning?
Only on condition that a person with a certificate of competence level 2 has installed and approved the system and instructed the person with a certificate of competence level 1. Then a person with a certificate of competence level 1 can also act as the operator of the system if public irradiation takes place. Otherwise, the use of lasers with public irradiation by a person with a certificate of competence level 1 is not permitted. Only a person with a certificate of competence level 2 is allowed to do it.
